‘Alright Charlie’ is a preventative resource pack that addresses child sexual exploitation (CSE) and grooming in a way that is age appropriate. This resource was funded by The Department for Education and was created by The BLAST Project – the UK’s leading male only CSE service.

PSHE at the Rowans is a subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for school, life and the world of work. 

In line with the new Government requirements, our PSHE curriculum is divided into the 3 main strands of:

  • Living in the wider world
  • Relationships and sex education (RSE)
  • Health and wellbeing

Our PSHE delivery, is designed to have an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. KS3 and KS4 received a well-balanced series of lessons and activities designed to enhance their understanding of life skills and beyond.

In KS3 we cover:

  • Sources of career info/advice
  • Choosing 2 careers/job choices
  • Using resources to gain info on careers
  • Requirements of job/careers
  • Careers action plan

These are done as a terms learning under the Living in the Wider world strand of PSHE but we also look at other aspects of work such as gender stereotyping in the work place and bullying/racism.

Pupils are encouraged to use the internet to research job requirements and then we discuss this as a class.

We look at where jobs/careers are advertised and how effective this is.

With the recent updates to PSHE resources we now look at which areas of work are expanding in the local area.

Pupils are also shown how the economy works and how borrowing and lending changes with this.

A broad range of topics are delivered through a series of assemblies, guest speakers, educational visits, inter- house competitions and tailored lessons, on a series of topics, both current and historical, which include:

  • Relationships and Sex education
  • Healthy eating and lifestyle choices
  • World celebrations
  • Cultural/religious beliefs
  • Careers development
  • Diversity
  • Online safety/Cyber bullying
  • Online Presence/Impact of social media
  • Mental Health Awareness
  • Tobacco, alcohol and drugs
  • Holocaust Memorial 
  • LGBTQ+ Awareness
  • Families and Building Relationships
  • Knife Crime
  • County lines

In Term 4 pupils attended The Ben Kinsella Trust where they had the opportunity to learn about the consequences of knife crime. Starting in the Autumn all KS3 pupils will take part in the Love Me, Love Me Not programme which promotes healthy relationships.

The Rowans has won the Medway Outstanding PSHE provision award, which was presented at an award ceremony in November. We have also achieved The Better Medway Bronze award and are now working on the silver!
