Art and Design Technology
The Rowans Primary Art and DT Curriculum Intent
At the Rowans Primary we want all children to engage in creative and imaginative expression, exploring their ideas and documenting their experiences. The children investigate the work of other artists and designers and assess various creative concepts. This provides opportunities for children to gain confidence and proficiency in a range of techniques, including drawing, painting, and sculpting, as well as selected craft skills like collage, printing, weaving, and pattern-making. Through a series of lessons designed to progressively build their skills and knowledge, children enhance their understanding of renowned artists, designers, and craft makers, nurturing their interest and curiosity about art. The children have opportunities to ask questions and showcase their abilities in diverse ways, using art as a medium for emotional expression to support their personal, social, and emotional growth.
The Rowans Primary Art and DT Curriculum Implementation
Our creative curriculum is designed to be taught over a two year rolling programme for our SEND pupils and emphasises diverse themes and topics to foster engagement and understanding. Lessons should be tailored to develop individual skills and techniques, enhancing control over materials while encouraging creativity and experimentation in a supportive environment. Pupils should learn how art and design influence our history and contribute to culture and community. The curriculum will introduce a variety of artists from different historical and cultural contexts to celebrate all contributions to the art world. It’s important to explore all forms of artistic expression, emphasising that "we are all artists" and that "art is for everyone," ensuring that every child feels valued and included in their creative journey.
The Rowans Primary Art and DT Curriculum Impact
At the Rowans Primary, we foster enthusiasm, curiosity, and a love of learning in both teachers and pupils. We maintain high expectations for children's attainment and progress in art, encouraging an environment where every pupil can thrive. All children are encouraged to use technical vocabulary enhancing their understanding of art. We promote improved inquiry skills, fostering inquisitiveness about the world and the impact of art and design. Pupils have opportunities to analyse their work with confidence, articulating their opinions on both their creations and those of others. Through continuous evaluation and improvement, children develop resilience and perseverance, ultimately speaking confidently about their art and design skills.
