Teaching and Learning
Our Curriculum at The Rowans Primary
At The Rowans Primary, Aspen, Maple, and Sycamore Classes share the same termly focus, centred on either a history or geography theme. This cross-curricular approach provides opportunities for children to engage in a topic through various engaging learning opportunities. Sycamore Class follows the bespoke Explore Curriculum, which integrates core English texts to engage pupils and develop their academic skills through play-based learning, relevant to their age and needs.
English outcomes are designed to explore various genres, including poetry, non-chronological reports, diary entries, and fictional stories, all linked to the termly theme. This approach provides pupils with numerous opportunities to research and investigate topics through different mediums.
Art and Design Technology (DT) further enriches the curriculum by incorporating the work of key artists related to the termly theme, encouraging creativity and building knowledge of artistic techniques.
Our Physical Education (PE) curriculum is carefully tailored to meet the diverse needs of children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. A different sport is introduced each week, fostering engagement and enabling pupils to develop a wide range of physical skills.
The Maths curriculum focuses on enhancing recall and retention of prior knowledge through targeted weekly activities, laying a strong foundation in numeracy.
Aligned with the National Curriculum, our programme emphasises a cross-curricular and engaging approach to learning. Additionally, we are proud to offer our bespoke Discovery Curriculum, designed to equip pupils with essential emotional regulation skills. This innovative programme helps pupils explore key emotions and develop coping strategies through play, nature, and movement. Integrated into all subject areas and delivered through standalone lessons, the Discovery Curriculum ensures that pupils continuously build the vocabulary and skills needed for self-regulation and emotional management.
To support both academic and emotional development, all pupils benefit from personalised interventions tailored to their individual needs.
Enrichment Opportunities
At The Rowans Primary, children have the opportunity to engage in weekly enrichment activities, such as offsite team building, swimming, cooking, and trampolining. These experiences are designed to nurture resilience and support the development of key social and life skills. Additionally, each term, children participate in offsite visits that are closely linked to the curriculum focus, further enhancing their knowledge and understanding. These visits also provide valuable opportunities for students to develop awareness and safety skills in public spaces.
