The Rowans AP Academy

Inspiring change for a brighter future

British Science Week 2024

The theme set by the British Science Association for British Science Week 2024 was time and all provisions in the Inspiring Change Multi Academy Trust played their part in making time capsules for future pupils in tens or even hundreds of years to discover!

To ensure our treasures and information will last for a long time each time capsule was made of a robust stainless-steel cylinder with rubber sealed openings held together with solid stainless-steel screws and bolts.

The ICPAP time capsule consisted of a copy of the Medway messenger, money of our time, predictions of what life will be like in 2050, current social media platforms, writing on ‘What we like to do’ detailing hobbies of our time etc, a welcome pack to the school, photos and information sheets on all of the teachers.

The ICSEN time capsule consisted of photos of the school, money, writing on my identity and all about me, information on different technology we used at school with photos, the ICSEN newspaper with news and information of what is going on in the school and their predictions of what life will be like in 2050.

The Rowans AP time capsule had a collection of actual coins of our time, examples of a variety of pupils work from different departments such as art, textiles and photography, photos pf pupils working in lessons to show school life, English writing on predictions on what life will be like in 2050, writing to describe hobbies and technology of our time.

Many, many, conversations on how time has changed, over our pupils and teachers’ lifetimes, in all three provisions with pupils learning about portable tape players called ‘Walkmans’, VHS and Betamax video recorders and of course what life was like without mobile phones. Many questions of how did we live without a mobile phone!

All three, time capsules, are now buried in the school garden and have been marked with a bird bath so future generations know where to find them.

I wonder who will dig the time capsules up in the future!
