Skills for Learning is a new lesson specifically for Key Stage 3 pupils tailored to enhance key academic competencies. We are focused on developing skills in four key areas that we believe are vital to pupils’ learning: numeracy, literacy, reading comprehension, and speech and language development.

Throughout the current term, the curriculum has concentrated on the mastery of times tables, precise spelling, advanced reading comprehension, and refined communication skills. We have the following objectives:

• Students will be able to demonstrate improved proficiency in fundamental numeracy, including basic arithmetic, number recognition, and problem-solving.
• Students will improve their literacy skills by practising reading comprehension, writing, and vocabulary, fostering a deeper understanding of written information and communication.
• To equip students with effective spelling strategies, enabling them to correctly spell commonly used words and enhance their overall written communication.
• Students will work on improving their verbal communication, focusing on clarity, pronunciation, and articulation to enhance effective expression in both casual conversations and formal settings.
• Encourage students to engage in group activities that promote teamwork, communication, and mutual support, fostering an environment where everyone contributes to the learning process.
• Emphasise the interdisciplinary nature of basic skills, demonstrating how numeracy, literacy, spelling, and speech and language skills are essential tools for success in various academic subjects and everyday life.

The ultimate aim of studying Skills for Learning is to equip pupils with essential academic skills, critical thinking abilities, effective communication, and practical problem-solving. We aim to instil a love for learning, promote teamwork, and foster adaptability, building confident and well-rounded individuals prepared for success in both academic and real-world settings.
