PSHE and Nurture
The Rowans Primary PSHE Intent
At the Rowans Primary our PSHE curriculum is designed to help learners grow intellectually, morally, and socially while equipping them with the skills and knowledge to stay physically and emotionally healthy and safe. It is structured into six key sections: Self-Awareness (exploring who they are, their strengths, and interests), Self-care, Support, and Safety (learning how to look after themselves and stay safe, including Relationships and Sex Education), Managing Feelings (understanding how emotions affect choices and behaviour), Changing and Growing (exploring personal growth and new responsibilities), Healthy Lifestyles (promoting physical and mental health), and The World I Live In (helping students live confidently in the wider world). The curriculum ensures all students, regardless of background or ability, can thrive and become the best version of themselves, developing the confidence to question, challenge, and contribute positively to society.
The Rowans Primary PSHE Implementation
Our PSHE is implemented to ensure that every child develops the knowledge, skills, and values they need to become healthy, responsible, and active members of society. The curriculum covers the three core PSHE themes: Health and Well-being, Relationships, and The Wider World, delivered through weekly lessons that follow the statutory requirements. It is taught over a three year rolling programme. Teachers also have the flexibility to address PSHE topics as they arise in the classroom, responding to specific issues and ensuring learning is relevant to the students' immediate needs. This approach helps children build key knowledge, language, and understanding, enabling them to apply these across the wider curriculum.
The Rowans Primary PSHE Impact
Our PSHE curriculum has a profound impact on our pupils helping them develop essential emotional, social, and life skills. It supports emotional regulation by teaching pupils to recognise and manage their feelings, and providing tools for coping with their emotions. Through activities like role-play and mindfulness, pupils gain greater awareness of their emotions, improving their ability to self-regulate. PSHE also fosters a sense of belonging by emphasising community involvement and the importance of building positive relationships, encouraging pupils to participate in group activities and collaborate with peers. The curriculum introduces pupils to role models who inspire them to overcome challenges and aspire to reach their potential, boosting self-esteem and confidence. PSHE helps navigate social situations, develop empathy, and build resilience, promoting both emotional well-being and active participation in their school and wider community.
