The Rowans Primary English Curriculum Intent

At The Rowans, in order to deliver a structured, rich English curriculum with clear progression of skills, we follow the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum 2014. We believe that English learning is key to accessing all other subject areas, therefore, high priority is given to the teaching of this subject within our school.

Our English curriculum is designed to inspire and engage primary-aged children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs by fostering a love for reading, writing, and communication through a creative and dynamic approach.

We aim to provide exposure to a rich variety of texts that reflect diverse experiences, cultures, and interests. Through engaging stories, interactive tools, and drama we intend to spark curiosity and imagination. To engage reluctant writers the intention is to develop functional and creative writing skills and self-expression through storytelling, poetry, journaling, and project-based writing activities.

A fundamental theme of our English curriculum is to incorporate real-world writing contexts to make learning meaningful and relatable to develop self-awareness, empathy, and resilience. Through group discussions, role-play, and collaborative writing children have opportunities to enhance their speaking and listening skills. Our collective aim is simple, for our pupils to become confident, lifelong readers and writers who are fully prepared for their future journey, in education and beyond.

The Rowans Primary English Curriculum Implementation

English units are taught on a two year rolling programme. This ensures progression between year groups and guarantees topics are covered. Each unit of work has a strong element of investigation to develop children’s enquiring minds as well as a clear knowledge content to build on both their prior and next stages of learning. English lessons are formed from a multi-sensory, technology-enhanced, and play-based approaches to cater to different learning styles and abilities.
